GUAMAP collaborates with indigenous communities in the northernmost department of Guatemala, Petén, as well as a diaspora of indigenous communities from Central America and Mesoamerica in Southern Arizona. The issues impacting the communities we work with include:
economic and climate related forced migration
loss of traditional healing modalities
lack of access to healthcare
lack of economic opportunities.
For over 30 years, GUAMAP has held trainings in remote rural communities in Petén to support access to traditional medicine modalities, provide economic resources for practitioners, and create better access to healthcare for rural communities.
In Southern Arizona, GUAMAP collaborates with community members and organizations from the indigenous diaspora across the Americas. These organizations include Xajun Ulew, Alianza Indigena, the Southside Workers Center and Paisanos Unidos. We work with community members to build connections with integrated and traditional healing modalities through community clinics, workshops, educational forums, and opportunities to connect with practitioners in Guatemala.
