TRAINING

Our Training Program

The Guatemala Acupuncture and Medical Aid Project (GUAMAP) was founded in 1994 as a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) acupuncture training project. We use a rural community health care model to develop sustainable integrated healthcare models for both the diaspora of Central American and Mesoamerican indigenous communities in Southern Arizona alongside indigenous communities in the northern department of Petén, Guatemala. Our community of indigenous integrated medicine practitioners collaborate to prepare curriculum and workshops to treat health conditions specific to the communities where acupuncturists live and work.

GUAMAP members in Southern Arizona collaborate with GUAMAP affiliated traditional and integrated medicine practitioners in Guatemala to support with:

Providing year round acupuncture services accessible to all community members living in Petan, Guatemala

In 2025, GUAMAP began training 11 new acupuncturists who will graduate at the end of 2026.

GUAMAP is the only nonprofit organization focused on acupuncture as a traditional medicine modality in Guatemala. Our acupuncturists now serve over 20 communities and include a community of acupuncturists who have been practicing for over 30 years. Those practitioners in Guatemala are working to provide services to their community members year round.
